Rouge Dior 841 Belle De Nuit for Holiday 2011

Dior lipsticks are a luxury I rarely indulge, but this year's holiday red drew me in.  It's a beautiful gold-flecked warm red, not so warm that I can't wear it but enough to go well with the season's gold eye shadows.
Shade
Full sun
The formula is creamy and hydrating, applying opaque in one stroke.  If you want a more sheer look, apply over balm.  This shade is limited edition, so when it's gone it's gone.

Check out how the gold flecks show in the sun!  Pretty but not over the top.

Urban Decay 24/7 Shadow Pencil Stash for Holiday 2011

The holiday season always brings a plethora of limited edition colors and value sets and this year is no exception.  Urban Decay usually has a couple sets of their awesome 24/7 liners, but this year they added a set of 24/7 shadow pencils.

24/7 shadow pencils have the same formula as the 24/7 liners, which means they apply easily with a soft, silky, highly-pigmented formula and once they set they last ALL DAY. By that I mean 12+ hours.  I haven't personally tested them for more than that, but at 12 hours there was no smudging or fading.  Superhuman!

This set includes three neutrals and two bright colors.

Delinquent
Delinquent
Delinquent is a gorgeous cool purple.  You know how some purples run red, making you look like you've been crying?  This isn't one of those purples.

Clash
Clash
The other bright, Clash, is a very pretty light aqua.  I'll probably just use this on the lash line because although I adore color, I do have limits.

Rehab

Juju

Sin
Sin
Rehab, Juju and Sin are the neutrals.  None lean particularly warm or cool so they should look good on all skin tones.  These are great for a quick daytime eye - just apply, blend, and don't worry about it fading over the day.

Shade
Late afternoon sun
The set retails for $34 and includes five 0.88 oz pencils. Normally each 0.1 oz pencil retails for $20, so this is a real value.  Additionally, Juju is unique to this kit and can't be purchased on its own.

Bottom line?  If you like easy eye makeup that lasts and a good value, get this!

Leroy likes to help

Leroy lives somewhere in the neighborhood but eats and frolics at our house.  He's fascinated by tarte's LipSurgence lip tints and smolderEYES eyeliners.  He also likes the UD 25/7 Glide-on Shadow pencils. :-)

Chanel Double Couleur French Accents: Navy / Rose

I probably bought this in 1987, when Chanel launched this then-unique product.  It's a double-ended wand with powder shadow in the two caps that rubs onto the sponge-tip applicators on the ends of the wand.  One end is navy blue, the other a light cool-leaning pink.

This was a neat idea, and I liked its portability.  Unfortunately, the sponges weren't the best method of application , giving little control over amount applied or even placement of the shadow.  The result was usually a bit patchy, and in those days I had no idea bout blending with brushes.  Because of this I didn't end up using it much.  Too bad, since the colors are quite pretty and look nice together.

Bobbi Brown Chocolate & Gold Eye Paint Palette

Bobbi Brown's holiday release this year is pretty spectacular, featuring items for lips and eyes and even a perfume!  (I want that perfume, but really can't justify buying it.  Sigh.)  Among the lovely palettes are two featuring the limited-release eye paint formula.  You might remember this wet/dry eye shadow from last year's holiday release, including the Smoldering eye palette. It must have been popular!

The packaging is pretty standard  for a Bobbi Brown palette, with thick black plastic embossed with Bobbi's name on the front and with a sticker on the back identifying the colors, amount inside, and so on.

Inside are four wells of baked eye shadow.  Three of the four are rather sparkly with quite a bit of fallout.  If you can deal with that, they are quite pretty!  The fourth is a dark, mostly matte blackened dark brown with gold veins running through it.  I use this as a liner or VERY lightly applied in the outer corner to darken and define.  There's a tiny bit of sparkle in it, but not enough to notice when applied.  These colors fade fast if you don't use a good primer first.

I love the colors, but I don't think the formula is up to Bobbi's usual standards.  It's too bad, since the colors are perfect for the holidays.  If you're willing to deal with fallout and take the time to prime, you can get a lovely look from these, but if you want something that just works, look elsewhere.

NYX Soft Matte Lip Creme: Amsterdam, Addis Ababa, and Tokyo

NYX Soft Matte Lip Cremes are a matte liquid lipstick.  I've never used anything quite like them.

They come in what looks like a short lip gloss tube with a sponge applicator and apply with a consistency similar to a thick mousse.  They are opaque and dry to a thin, sticky finish that's matte and quite drying.

Pretty colors, but my lips can't handle the dehydration.  Putting balm on first helps some, but not enough for me.  Topping with hydrating gloss helps too, but that defeats the purpose of having a matte lipstick.

This is the first NYX product I've tried that I couldn't wholeheartedly recommend.  Fortunately, it's quite inexpensive at $6 on the NYX website.  I got mine in a HauteLook flash sale for less.

Shiseido Moisture Mist Lip Liner Pencil: Pink 21

Here is the other Shiseido lip liner pencil I have from the mid-1980's.  This is a much more typical color choice for me, though it's still likely to have been a gift with purchase.  I had several Shiseido lipsticks since the formula was BOMB, but that wouldn't have convinced me to buy a liner I wouldn't use.

This liner is a bright opaque neutral to cool pink.  It goes on easily despite its advanced age.

Pretty, no?
